Becoming Artists and Researchers: Collaborative Self-Study Between a Doctoral Student and Advisor

Abstract

In this roundtable proposal, a tenured faculty member and doctoral student at dissertation stage offer a self-study conducted through the arts as a way of knowing and sharing ideas. We embrace ideas about material and medium in which Eisner argued that artists use materials, and those materials become means for supporting thought, encouraging innovation, and developing expression. We apply material and medium for artistry and scholarship as we developed an ongoing dialogue and individual artmaking to examine both our art and research practices. We focus on living inquiry informed by a/r/tography to puzzle through the process of developing a dissertation, as well as understanding the nuances of relationships among graduate students and advisors, ourselves and our artmaking and research.
