Understanding the Unique Impacts of COVID-19 on Transitions of Maternal Clinical Profiles and Their Children's Mental Health

Abstract

COVID-19 has impacted MMH, research on how subsets of risk and protective factors are uniquely related to clinical transitions of maternal mental health (MMH) is needed. A two-staged study on 297 low-income mothers that first used latent transition analysis to identify profiles of mental health transitions with the onset of COVID-19, then descriptive analyses to examine what demographic and familial factors (i.e., child’s mental health) are related. Twelve transition profiles were found and further grouped by decline, stability, and improvements in mental health. A better understanding of the heterogeneity in MMH and its correlates may assist clinicians and policymakers in providing more effective interventions to help improve mothers’ mental health.
