"Gimme That Driving Satisfaction": Examining the Expectations of Underrepresented Tenure-Track Faculty at Research Institutions

Sun, April 16, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

Institutions often articulate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in their mission statements, however, often such espoused values are not reflected in the faculty. This study aimed to explore faculty job satisfaction by learning expectations at the point of recruitment, interrogating whether expectations were fulfilled, and understanding the consequences on job satisfaction. Faculty shared their specific expectations concerning the institutional climate and performance expectations. Participants also discussed how these expectations were formulated, whether expectations were fulfilled or broken, and the consequences on job satisfaction. Findings revealed expectations (fulfilled or broken) impact how faculty experience job satisfaction.
