Abstract

Teacher stress and burnout have long been recognized as factors contributing to teacher attrition. As we enter the third full academic year impacted by COVID-19, reports of teacher shortages across the country continue to surface. Given the impact that closing and reopening schools had on teachers’ work, this study examined teacher burnout in relation to the pandemic. Data from a survey of nearly 4,000 educators are presented to document levels of burnout and understand factors that contribute to teacher burnout. Findings indicate that without concrete action to reduce teacher burnout, the mass exodus of teachers will grow and worsen.
