Many methodologists use theory to drive methods, but Grounded Theory applications use methodology to generate theory. One such method is the constant comparison technique of systematically comparing each data point to another, as well as codes to codes, and categories to categories. This meticulous method strengthens the theory grounded but poses an acute methodological risk in qualitative research drawing on Intersectionality theory: constantly comparing isolated data points splinters participant identities. The aim of this critical methodological essay is to delineate the problematic application of constant comparison in intersectional qualitative research.
