Creating Consequential Children's Media: Findings From a National Needs Assessment With Informal Educators and Caregivers (Poster 25)

Abstract

In the following paper, we present a nationwide needs assessment conducted with informal educators and caregivers of 5–8-year-olds in summer and fall 2021. This mixed-methods study was designed to inform an educational transmedia children’s program focused on three curricular pillars: career exposure, executive function skills, and self-regulation strategies. We aimed to ground our content development in the knowledge and needs of those working most closely with the children we hope to serve. Here, we discuss how informal educators and caregivers think about young children’s emotional development and self-regulation strategies, how they approach these topics in informal learning spaces, during programming and at home, and the implications for further media and program development.
