This study centers Black girls and visualizes their perspectives of dual language programming, across their entire linguistic repertoire. In implementing this critical visual participatory methods, #blackgirlmagic was seen, heard, and better understood. Simply put, #blackgirlmagic is real. By taking time, creating space, and listening to our youngest, and often marginalized learners in all of the fullness of their languages, we were able to discover, that yes, Black girls are magic, but are also so much more than that. As we think “about pedagogy beyond the white gaze” (Paris & Alim, 2017), and beyond the monolingual tongue, we begin to fully visualize these girls, as they show up at the crux of their intersecting identities: Black, female, young, and multilingual.
