The Moral Ethic of Cariño: Critical Pedagogies in the Teaching of Immigrant-Origin Students

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine (a) the practices and (b) perspectives of highly effective teachers of immigrant-origin Latinx youth. This study highlights critical approaches to teaching immigrant-origin Latinx youth. The findings of this study offer possible critical pedagogical implications that affirm the experiential knowledge of Latinx youth as a catalyst for curriculum design.
The objective of this paper is to report findings from a portraiture study aimed at understanding the practices and perspectives of community-nominated, highly effective teachers of immigrant-origin Latinx youth. For this purpose of this proposal, I will highlight one teacher’s practices and perspectives across a working framework on the ethic of cariño.
