Abstract

Expository text comprehension in digital formats is a challenging endeavor for children. Computer-based learning environments (CBLEs) deliver strategy instruction, however, they may underestimate the importance of motivation. Therefore, the current study employed a game-based learning environment (GBLE) to address both motivation and strategy instruction, in a quasi-experimental media comparison design. For six weeks 234 5th graders engaged in either the GBLE MISSIONS WITH MONTY or a matched CBLE version and were assessed on reading comprehension and reading motivation. Results revealed significant treatment effects, as students in the GBLE condition outperformed their CBLE peers in reading comprehension and reading motivation. Findings support GBLEs as effective tools to foster digital expository text comprehension and motivation, particularly for struggling and uninterested readers.
