Pedagogies of Blackness in Nonformal Education: Toward Collective (Re)Clamation and Liberation

Abstract

Drawing from a 2021 study (Author 1 & Author 2), this paper explores the pedagogical practices within a nonformal Black educational collective. The purpose of our paper is to deepen our collective understanding of the pedagogies that exist in nonformal Black educational environments. Drawing on participatory Pan-African public education, the paper explores three important ideas: (Re)membering through the formation of critical collective consciousness, (Re)claiming dispossessed knowledge with compassion and empowerment, and (Re)newing a liberatory spirit. These three areas of emphasis have the potential to provide great insight into the pedagogies of resistance that have been honed for centuries among people racialized as “Black.”
