Exploring the Social Relations of STEM Education

Abstract

Current ideological attacks on PK-16 education require education researchers to pursue curricular inquiry that engages critically with often conflicting assumptions and claims about STEM education within the field itself. To inform these efforts, we explore the intertextual and interdiscursive relationships within NSF funded abstracts and their corresponding Request for Proposals. Specifically, we focus on projects funded through the DRK-12 and IUSE programs that include a formal relationship with Florida International University, a large public HSI research university. If STEM education is intended to be an important site in which educational communities grapple with the serious issues that confront our society, STEM researchers must likewise grapple with the social relations and material conditions that produce “STEM education” in the first place.
