Abstract

Social welfare problems including education inequality emerged due to the urban-rural dual structure and household registration system, which is called “hukou” in Chinese. Descendants of migrants, who follow their parents to the cities inherit their parents’ non-local hukou status, are officially counted as migrants. The current study found that family factors including family education and parental involvement are associated with migrant children’s education needs while most migrant parents have low education levels and little time to help their kids. Thus, this study raises important scholarly implications for Chinese family intervention and practices, especially for students from immigrant families.
