For several decades, researchers have been interested in understanding student engagement to better predict and explain academic outcomes. However, the measurement of student engagement has been siloed based on a separation of theories because of type, approach, and overall conceptualization of how students engage in the school and classroom. The current examination of a new instrument incorporates affective, behavioral, and cognitive engagement with emotional engagement. The research team used survey validation methods to guide the design of a school engagement dashboard for educators. When visualizing more comprehensive student responses about school engagement to educators, then schools can make decisions about how to improve it. Educators can use this data to decide how to lead student engagement for academic success.
