The Southern Education Leadership Initiative (SELI) is a leadership development program that supports fellows in developing equity leadership skills. In this paper, we analyze five cohorts of SELI fellows’ self-reported experiences with the program, discussing aspects of their experiences they identified as most helpful in developing equity-focused leadership skills. These aspects included mentorship from site supervisors, opportunity to hear their peers reflect on their own experiences developing equity leadership, and the ability to see both leadership and equity focus enacted together in practice. We argue that development of leadership equity skills is a key but understudied phenomenon, and that programs must focus on leadership praxis to give future leaders the opportunity to develop in this area.
