Identifying Massachusetts Schools That Are Exceeding Achievement Expectations: "Beating the Odds" (Poster 30)

Abstract

Schools and districts have wrestled with how to best continue successfully educating students during a pandemic and through learning disruptions since spring of 2020. The challenges brought on by COVID-19 compounded with education losses over time are a detriment to student achievement. To better understand the overall impact of COVID-19 and student learning, this paper analyzed i-Ready® Diagnostic Assessment data and data from school districts of Massachusetts for the 2020-2021 academic year and assessed which schools performed better than expected “beat the odds” given their students’ demographic background. This paper seeks to answer this question about promising practices by identifying schools who are positive outliers and beat the odds.
