Using Learning Environment Ideas in Action Research in Science Education Classes

Abstract

This study utilized learning environment assessments in action research aimed at improving the psychosocial learning environments in elementary science methods classes at a large public university in Texas, United States. Six instructors and 133 pre-service elementary teachers (PSETs) used the well-established What Is Happening In this Class? (WIHIC) learning environment questionnaire was used as the instrument to measure perceived learning environments in nine sections of the course. The instructors received an analysis of the initial questionnaire and chose one scale of the learning to improve in their class. At the end of the semester the PSETs again took the WIHIC survey and results were compared to the initial administration. Overall, the instructors were successful in improving their classroom environments.
