Valuing Neurodiversity on Campus: Perspectives and Priorities of Neurodivergent Students, Faculty, and Professional Staff

Abstract

Through the lens of the neurodiversity paradigm and holding the understanding that neurodiversity is valuable to society, a mixed methods neurodiversity survey was developed to gather perspectives and priorities around neurodiversity from neurodivergent members of a university multi-campus community. The neurodiversity survey was completed by 254 neurodivergent participants: 103 faculty/staff and 151 students. Faculty, staff and students provided a strength-based perspective of neurodiversity and established needs and priorities in the area of disclosure for faculty and staff, mental health supports, expanding supports and accommodations, and educating campus communities through collaboration with neurodivergent self-advocates in university leadership positions.
