Pedagogies of Silence: Brazilian Immigrant Families Rethinking Bilingual Education Policy in Massachusetts

Sun, April 16, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 2, Michigan B

Abstract

Recent scholarship has shown how everyday policy implementation of bilingual education does not necessarily benefit immigrant students (Chavez-Moreno, 2021; Garcia, 2021). This presentation explores Brazilian immigrant parents’ concern for equity within a Portuguese-English Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE) program in Massachusetts. Through a program designed to serve Brazilian immigrant populations, this study centers non-elite perspectives and knowledges about policy and policy outcomes in one district in the state.
