Sun, April 16, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

This survey study investigated elementary English language arts teachers’ attitudes on video gaming and learning. 328 teachers from a Midwestern state completed a 37-item survey to examine their general perceptions of video games, their attitudes on game-based learning, and their perspectives on utilizing video games for literacy teaching and learning. Results indicate that the teachers believe children enjoy playing video games, view games as an important aspect of youth culture, and generally believe that video games can promote student motivation, engagement, and learning. However, only 36.6% of participants indicated they regularly integrated video games into their literacy teaching and approximately a third were skeptical about integrating video games into their literacy teaching. Full results will be presented at conference.
