Fri, April 14, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

In recent years school board meetings have become largely publicized and widely attended by parents, community members, and teachers. National politics have found their way into schools and parents are making sure their voices are heard. This paper seeks to understand how national debates, specifically around Critical Race Theory, impact teachers’ perceptions of public education. The study takes place in a large, urban district in Michigan, and relies on teacher interviews to allow them to share how their perceptions of teaching have changed, or not, in the wake of these national debates.
