Designing Video Diary Interventions to Capture Participant Voice and Experience

Abstract

Video diaries are a valuable data collection method for learning about participant experiences over time. This study examines how a video diary intervention was designed and implemented in a study of teenagers’ social media use. Findings show that semi-structured prompts allowed four main response styles to emerge. Video lengths varied, but even shorter videos supplied relevant data. By sharing these details along with the temporal, visual, style, and content outcomes, we hope to encourage other educational researchers to use this approach, and provide considerations for how to design and structure the data collection process. Through careful planning of temporal, content, and technological elements of a diary intervention, educational researchers can gain deeper insights into participants’ experiences than through interviews alone.
