Hate Speech Against Asian American Youth: The Role of School Contexts in Perpetration and Protection

Abstract

In our study, we investigate how schools with stronger authoritative disciplinary climates (strong disciplinary rules coupled with support from caring adults) relate to whether Asian American youth are victims of hate speech at school. We analyzed data on n=938 Asian American adolescents (Mean age = 14.8 years; 48% female) from three recent waves of the School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey. We found that Asian American students in schools with stronger disciplinary structure and student support had lower odds of experiencing hate speech (OR = 0.69; p <. 05; and OR = 0.66, p < .05, respectively). Altering schooling conditions to promote stronger authoritative climates hold considerable promise in protecting Asian American youth from hate speech.
