Narrative Intergenerational Dialogue in an Online Teacher Development Community

Fri, April 14, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: West Tower - Ballroom Level, Atlanta

Abstract

The proposal presents an induction process based on a teacher development online community. The community promoted intergenerational dialogue through narrative writing among preservice teachers, beginning teachers, and experienced ones. Data was collected between 2016 and 2019 and focused on the narratives produced in a discussion board. They were analysed with a view to characterize the processes by which beginning teachers learn to teach, by building on experienced teachers’ practical knowledge. Results indicate that intergenerational dialogue helps all teachers develop knowledge of practice, as they construct it collectively, by reflecting on existing practices and on how they can become more inclusive. They also identify difficulties and advance planning proposals that support more socially just schools.
