Abstract

The DESSA High School Student Self-Report (SSR) is a measure of students’ social and emotional competence (SEC) that can inform social emotional learning instruction and intervention. The SSR assesses students’ SEC across seven competencies: self-awareness/optimistic thinking, self-management, personal responsibility, goal-directed behavior, decision making, social awareness, and relationship skills. Using latent profile analysis, we examined individual differences in the profiles of 10,607 high school students’ SEC as measured by the SSR. The sample includes data from 14 high schools serving a student population that is 49% white, 25% Black, 16% Latinx, 4% two or more races, 3% Asian, and 2% Native American. Results indicate a five-profile solution, with profiles differing in degree rather than type. Implications will be discussed.
