This paper explores the impact of a fifteen year partnership between a large urban school district and a university research team with the goal of creating a sustained and synergistic system in which all students learn to lead school reform for education justice and schools become more responsive to their needs and interests. Our analysis uses a bricolage (Kincheloe, 2005) approach to reflect on and uncover the tensions, contradictions, and power dynamics at play, and raises questions about the potential of scaling innovations by working with and within oppressive systems.
