Abstract

Teacher surveys are useful for characterizing teacher working conditions. Such surveys are useful for identifying the areas needing improvement, for tracking improvement progress, and for connecting improvements to teacher and student outcomes. However, if the focus is on the higher-order construct of a school’s working conditions rather than the individual working conditions components, the analysis must confront the high correlations among the components. We apply Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) techniques to identify profiles that group schools together based on response patterns across eight working conditions components and explore how contextual factors are associated with the profiles. LPA provides a helpful and informative way to inform our understanding of how working conditions vary and can inform efforts to improve working conditions.
