Knowledge-Brokering in a Research-Intensive Canadian University: Mapping Connections and Measuring Impact

Abstract

Knowledge brokering is an approach to mobilizing research gaining traction internationally. However, despite its potential to generate more mutual connections among research actors, the evidence base for brokering suffers from many knowledge gaps. The purpose of this research is to explore the roles and activities of formal and informal knowledge brokers associated with a research-intensive Canadian university as well as examine their impacts on the connections among research actors. Drawing together the design elements of case study and mixed methods research, this study details (a) how knowledge brokers influence the patterns of connections among research actors, (b) the roles and activities that brokers employ, and (c) the impacts of brokering on the nature and quality of connections among research actors.
