For Blackwomen Only: A Written Conversation Between Two First-Year Doctoral Students

Abstract

This paper focuses on our experiences as two Blackwomen scholars in the first year of our doctoral program. This paper documents what we learned and how we came into our own as Blackwomen and doctoral students. Rather than centering white folks and striving for their acceptance or acknowledgment, we aimed to write, share, and respond to one another as interconnected Blackwomen. We exchanged our positionality reflection pieces and met to discuss similar themes and concepts in our individual statements. We then separately wrote responses to each other. We present here a glimpse into our innermost selves. We exude testimonial authority offering a part of our stories to others in hopes of inspiring more Blackwomen to do the same.
