Stress, Depression, and Turnover Intentions Among School Counselors: The Role of Professional Identity and Burnout

Thu, May 4, 2:30 to 4:00pm CDT (2:30 to 4:00pm CDT), Division E Virtual Sessions, Division E - Section 1: Counseling Virtual Paper Room

Abstract

Stress is an integral part of school counselors’ contemporary role. The current study focuses on the mediating role of professional identity and burnout in the relationship of counseling and non-counseling stress factors with depression and turnover intentions in a sample of Israeli school counselors (N = 251, 98% female; Mage = 44.40). Results indicated that burnout and professional identity fully mediated the relationship between role stress factors (non-counseling and counseling) and negative outcomes (depression and turnover intentions). Findings suggest that strengthening school counselors’ professional identity, alongside reducing potential burnout by reducing non-counseling stress, could improve school counselors’ wellbeing and increase stability in the school system.
