Across Local and Global Contexts: Implications for Equity From Pandemic-Related Practicum Decisions in Teacher Education

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted local and global inequities and presented opportunities for reimagining more equitable systems (Ladson-Billings, 2021; Larkin, 2021). Building on previous work (Author 1 & Author 2, 2022), we investigate the implications of early pandemic decisions in later-stage pandemic practicum. The pandemic disrupted practicum opportunities (Flores & Gago, 2020; Kidd & Murray, 2020; la Velle et al., 2020; Moyo, 2020) and created new ones. We used comparative case study (Bartlett & Vavrus, 2017) to analyze changes in practicum two years after the start of the pandemic at a private university in urban Chile and a public university in suburban/rural U.S. Our analysis examines the functions of privilege and marginalization within and across our local and global contexts.
