In the Classroom or on the Shelf? A Qualitative Comparative Analysis of Factors Associated With Teacher Uptake of a Social and Emotional Learning Curriculum in Colombia

Abstract

This study evaluated a strategy that aimed at improving socioemotional learning (SEL), conflict resolution skills, respect of diversity and gender equality in 21 schools in 3 regions of Colombia. The factors that influenced the participation of teachers in a professional development program, their take-up and level of implementation of the SEL classroom material was analyzed. Qualitative comparative analysis was used to identify the necessary and sufficient factors, as well as the combinations of factors, that lead to positive implementation outcomes. Results showed that: relevance of training and implementation, perception of quality of training, motivation of teachers and students and self-confidence were among the most important factors that are necessary to implement successful SEL interventions in the context.
