Kingmakers of Oakland: I'm a King!

Abstract

While Hip-Hop was always a prevalent aspect of the AAMA/KOO pedagogy, during the Covid pandemic, the young people organized and began producing albums. To date, KOO has released on all platforms the following albums: Kings in the Making, Revolution Remix, and Black Joy. With an unapologetic focus on Black boys, KOO has recently produced a Hip-Hop album based on the racial justice uprisings of 2020, highlighting resistance narratives under the auspices that “every movement needs its own music.”
