Scholars argue research-practice partnerships can democratize research by disrupting one-way paths from research to practice (Tseng et al., 2017). However, questions remain whether RPPs actually promote equitable practices for all (e.g., Diamond, 2021). In this study, we examined how members of RPPs conceptualize equity. Examining interviews from research- and practice-side partners from 24 RPPs, we drew on institutional theory to create a typology of how RPP members understand and enact equity in their work. We identified three different conceptualizations of equity-in-process, as well as three ways RPPs conceptualized equity in outcomes. This typology can help RPPs investigate tensions in the pursuit of equity and be used to advance research on how conceptions of equity are consequential for RPPs.
