Abstract

Integrating the arts within disciplinary subjects has the potential to counter the decline of arts in public schools. Such integration may benefit from non-arts teachers’ evolving knowledge of an art form, willingness to engage in this work, and opportunities for collaboration with arts practitioners/teachers. Teacher education may play an important role in creating innovations for arts integration. We describe a TE program model that immersed preservice teachers in an arts discipline (drama-based pedagogy). The study illustrates what is possible when teachers experiment with novel arts-based practices and inquire into pedagogical processes to develop an exploratory pedagogical rationale for student learning.
