Abstract

This study uses qualitative methods to explore how homeschooling students’ explanations of the phenomenon of why airplanes fly evolve when they participate in a Model-Based Inquiry (MBI) sequence. By using qualitative methods, we analyzed the responses of two teams of students in a homeschooling community in Mexico as they progressed in the four stages of an MBI sequence to describe why airplanes fly. We conclude that students’ explanations progressively evolved to include properties of the wing, relationships between ideas and evidence, and unobservable causal processes. Results contribute to the research in homeschooling by providing effective modes of science instruction that homeschooling parents and communities can use to promote students in these settings to build defensible causal explanations of natural phenomena.
