Overwhelmingly white, middle class, and female, American teachers are typically nice people who strive to create welcoming environments in their classrooms. In this paper, I consider the inadequacy of niceness for addressing tensions related to race, language, and nationality as they trickle down into the classrooms of even the youngest children. The disciplinarity of niceness, although considered a critical component of moral education and development within many progressive schools, may deter teachers from practicing a vision of classroom citizenship that can standardize whiteness.
