Native students are severely underrepresented in STEM, especially at the graduate level where less is known about their persistence. Using a mixed-methods approach via surveys and photo elicitation interview methodology co-designed with Native researchers and students, we identify systemic and social barriers and supports experienced by Native graduate students in STEM education. Barriers included experiences of discrimination and a lack of sense of belonging in the institution or STEM field. Supports for Native graduate students included family and home communities; advisors and faculty; and the motivation to give back to their communities. We conclude with recommendations for STEM departments and institutions of higher education.
