The Erasure of Educational Leaders of Color: It Begins With the Job Description

Abstract

In this critical policy analysis we draw from both critical race theory and the critical studies of whiteness to demonstrate how educational leader job descriptions reify White supremacy. Through analysis of job descriptions in one large urban southwestern district we show how educational leaders of color are erased from the leadership role through the tools of whiteness that reify the expectation that leaders are to uphold the status quo. In this process, we argue that the cultural wealth and experiential knowledge of leaders of color are erased and call for a re-vision and re-writing of job descriptions to be inclusive of leaders of color.
