Are Educational Leaders of Color Truly Able to Lead for Equity? Maintaining the Status Quo or Disrupting Unequitable Systems? A Case Study

Abstract

Dr. Gabriella Ramirez is the first female Latinx superintendent to lead a large urban public school district in the northeast. Close to three years into a 4-year tenure, Dr. Ramirez faced a very pub-lic, malicious campaign calling for her removal because she decided to alter admissions processes for the highly segregated gifted and talented and specialized high school programs in the district. This case study challenges current and aspiring leaders to examine their core values and ethics. It also requires that they explore why criticality, and the development critical consciousness are vi-tal components of anti-racist culturally responsive school and district leadership.
