Refining a Panel of Experts Validation Methodology for Instrument Development

Abstract

Valid instruments are essential tools for research into student learning. Review by a panel of experts is an important step to assess validity. This paper reports on our refinement of Elangovan and Sundaravel’s expert validation methodology, incorporating experts in graphic design and human-computer interaction, adding dimensions to their template, and including individualized response letters. The experts in graphic design and human-computer interaction provided distinct and useful feedback not elicited from content experts. This suggests expert panels of digital instruments include graphic design and human-computer interaction experts to elevate instrument clarity, and navigation. We recommend incorporating response letters to increase accountability, elicit expert collaboration, and validate intellectual contributions. Enhancing expert validation methodology through these recommendations will lead to improved digital instruments.
