Abstract

This study explores how pre-service teachers begin to develop as community-engaged educators using a framework of culturally sustaining pedagogies to better understand perceptions, attitudes, and developing pedagogical praxis. The study involves two in-depth semi-structured interviews with 5 pre-service teachers as they completed their first term of a university-based teacher education program to better understand their developing conceptions and enactments of community-engaged teaching. The data was then analyzed using a framework of culturally sustaining pedagogies. Findings suggest that community-engaged teaching can be a way to enact culturally sustaining pedagogies. This study adds a site for empirical research and adds to the literature on community-engaged teaching, pre-service teacher education, and culturally sustaining pedagogies.
