Understanding Attitudes Toward Data Literacy: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Data literacy has been gaining popularity in recent years. Although the cognitive aspects of data literacy have been extensively studied, a comprehensive understanding of its affective aspects is lacking. This literature review synthesizes 50 studies published before 2022 focusing on attitudes toward data literacy using the PRISMA approach. The results suggest that (1) the majority of studies were conducted in North America and Europe targeting university students and teachers; (2) the attitudes toward data application were the most frequently measured data literacy attitudes; and (3) self-report surveys were widely adopted as assessment instruments to investigate attitudes. This review contributes to the knowledge of data literacy from a theoretical, a methodological, and a practical perspective.
