Paulo Friere argued that teaching, especially within banking education models, too-often leads to fatalistic ideologies that falsely justify oppressions and tout that transforming current societal structures is impossible and such actions are ‘unnatural’/’abnormal.’ Pedagogies saturated in hope is essential for students to construct goals to guide praxis to counter taught fatalism that intensifies hegemony and dominance of Nature. This paper will focus on environmental pedagogies, specifically ecopedagogies with citizenships (local-to-global planetary) pedagogies for teaching to disrupt fatalistic normalization of unsustainability, dominance, and socio-environmental injustices. We argue the need for utopic environmental pedagogies to disrupt oppressive forms of citizenships; top-down Development and globalization; epistemologies of the North dominance; neoliberalism; and (neo)coloniality. We will argue through various contexts, particularly focusing on Colombia.
