Cultivating Novice Researchers as Value Creators: A Self-Study in Teaching Doctoral Research Methods Courses

Sat, April 15, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

The pursuit of truth is the purpose of educational research; however, not all truths hold the same value. As this year’s conferences asks us to interrogate consequential research in pursuit of truth, the authors of this self-study identified pedagogical practices that helped our students become value creators in an introductory research course. As our students pondered their potential contribution to the pursuit of truth as novice researchers, we reflected: how successful are we in cultivating our students’ knowledge so that they create value in their research? In particular, reflection through journaling fostered deep engagement with difficult material, support through dialogic interactions beginning researchers identify value in the course content, and detailed resources developed their identities as professionals and emerging scholars.
