Abstract

This research investigates academic faculty’s views on which purposes are currently being adopted (perceptions) and which purposes should be adopted (expectations) by higher education institutions. Results are interpreted according to the two concepts of Educare and Educere, and distinguished between perceived and expected dominant (general) goals and educational process (alternative) goals. Data were collected from 45 academics from public universities in Turkey. Watty’s (2006) questionnaire for the purposes of higher education was used. Data shows that academics believe universities are currently adopting dominant goals, whereas the goals related to the educational process should be adopted more appropriately. Universities should give equal importance to providing students with both professional and personal skills.
