Abstract

In this paper, we draw on the significant body of work on mathematics identity to create a framework for a financial identity model that could inform equitable financial education. The aim is to show structurally what we need to learn and to motivate the idea that working to discover these details is a pressing research question. Given the increasingly frequent calls to include financial education in K-12 curricula, as well as significant gaps in the financial education research literature, we see a pressing need as well as an opportunity to use a critical lens early in the development of an emerging field.
