This study aims to evaluate to what extent teacher nominations and student self-nominations are more or less equitable when being used in identifying gifted learners. Teacher and student versions of a rating scale were completed by 145 participants from two rural public schools. A latent class analysis was run to explore potential differences between teacher and student ratings by SES, gender, previous identification as gifted, and ethnicity. Results showed four latent classes for both instruments and suggested that students self-evaluated similarly between subgroups, but teachers rated subgroups with larger amounts of low-SES students lower, and rated females and students previously identified as gifted higher, whereas they scored students of all ethnicities similarly.
