Teaching During COVID-19: Comparing In-Person and Online Teaching Efficacy

Sun, April 16, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 4th Floor, Addison - 1/2 Marriott Ballroom

Abstract

This study examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on teachers’ self-efficacy when teaching online compared to teaching in-person. Participants completed the OSTES (Ohio State Teacher Efficacy Scale) and a background survey at two time points: the beginning of the transition online (Time 1) and nine months later (Time 2). Findings from multiple t-tests indicated that teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs increased significantly from Time 1 to Time 2, specifically in classroom management and student engagement. Self-efficacy was higher in-person than online regardless of amount of training teachers received, highlighting the need for more targeted professional development programs for online teaching.
