Fri, April 14, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

Regional Public Universities are vital institutions of higher education that seek to serve, improve, and contribute to their communities through public service and civic engagement. This study used Emery & Flora’s (2006) Community Capitals Framework to critically analyze the capital effects that Regional Public Universities have on their communities. The researchers used linear regression analyses to show how census tracts are affected by the presence of a Regional Public University or other university and the relationship the college has on an area’s economic, physical, social, human, and cultural capital attainment. Emergent findings are discussed and a plan for future inquiry is detailed. This study has practical implications for university capital planning and practitioners engaged in civic learning.
