This self-study examines a teacher education course for general education preservice teachers on teaching English Language Learners how to resist the technocratic transformation focused on knowledge and skills acquisition and holistically cultivate preservice teachers’ inner qualities. Data sources, such as reflective journal entries and formal and informal student feedback, were coded and thematically analyzed using the theoretical framework of Daisaku Ikeda’s definition of global citizenship characterized by the capacities of wisdom, compassion, and courage. The author presents representative examples from her course that cultivated these three inner qualities in her students. This study illustrates how teachers and teacher educators can examine their own perspectives and practices to create a more equitable and holistic education for all students.
